3 Story good; 2 Story bad.
Once you field an Imperial Knight, you get to know quickly if your terrain is tall enough.

Up until this point, I had mainly created 2 story terrain.
I quickly realized I needed 3 story when the buildings only came up to my knights knees.
I’m also of the opinion that terrain should look good, but not upstage the minis you have spent hours painting.
I usually make terrain out of an MDF base and foamcore. Foamcore is easy enough to cut and the dollar store sells it for cheap.
I also decided to try to make an easy upgrade by 3d printing window frames. These are given a generous “lip” over the sides and top, covering any gaps in the hole cut in the foamcore.
I made a quick template for window frame sizes, and support columns and bought dollar store “craft sticks” to break up the otherwise flat surfaces.
I used lots of cocktail sticks to hold the ‘walls’ in place while the glue was drying. These were invaluable for keeping walls at right angles on the corners. You can see a hole I have not filled yet in ‘Tall Square Building’ image
Terrain Layouts
The 3d print window frames, MDF base and rock rubble made the terrain weighty enough not to be knocked around easily.
I downloaded the Warhammer Community Pariah Nexus Tournament Companion to see exactly the required sizes and layouts of the buildings, to get an idea of number of buildings required, also seeing as though these are all ruins which direction the long sides of the “L” shapes are facing to follow the exact layouts.
NOTE: The .obj window frame file is now available on cults3d to print yourself. (More coming soon)
Painting
I drew ruler width tiles in the removeable foamcore floors and sponged a marble texture. Burned umber tile grout. I 3d printed some barrels, and added some broken tiles (again sponged texture) to the floors.
Buildings got sprayed black with a light dawnstone zenethal from 45 degrees.
They all feel exactly enough but not too much detail, work and overall feel. Reminds me of 1960’s style office blocks.
The nexus companion has 8 layouts, 2 of them have more terrain than others, so I removed them from the list and voila! roll a d6 at the start of the battle to choose your terrain layout. Quick and easy setup 🙂
