Many years ago, to be able to create portraits, you had to use something known as a pencil. Hexagonal piece of wood kind of like a chopstick with a piece of graphite running through the center of its length. You would sharpen the pencil wood to expose more graphite as it was rubbed away on paper. Undoing was VERY difficult and would always leave smudges and indentations in the paper that could never be truly hidden. Today, AI, ZBrush and 3D modelling are different ways of showing portraits, but they still require the understanding of volumes, shapes and musculature. Here are a few examples of my pencil sketches… more just to prove how old I actually am
